Show Me The Money…
Antidepressants were the best-selling category of prescription drugs 10 years ago in 2000. They were also the best-selling category in 1999.

Retail sales of antidepressants totaled over $10 billion in 2000, up 21% from the previous year. Imagine what they are today!!!!!

Depressing News about Depression Drugs

In the February 8, 2010 edition of the popular news magazine, Newsweek, it was reported that popular anti-depression drugs are no more effective than a placebo and, the placebo has no side effects or withdrawal symptoms.

According to the author of the Newsweek article, the prevailing wisdom pushed by the drug industry is flawed. She writes,
“There is no question that the safety and efficacy of antidepressants rest on solid scientific evidence,” as psychiatry professor Richard Friedman of Weill Cornell Medical College recently wrote in The New York Timeses, the drugs seem to be effective, in that they lift depression in most patients.  But that benefit is hardly more than what patients get when they, unknowingly, and as part of a study, take a dummy pill—a placebo.
As more and more scientists who study depression and the drugs that treat it are concluding, that suggests that antidepressant drugs are basically expensive Tic Tacs.  The impact of these studies would indicate that taking these drugs is likely a waste but… “the study’s impact?  The number of Americans taking antidepressants doubled in a decade, from 13.3 million in 1996 to 27 million in 2005. Could it be TV marketing??

The Bottom Line…The Bottom Line…The Bottom Line…

When 82 percent of the response to antidepressants had also been achieved by a dummy pill, wouldn’t common sense have been to simply remove these drugs from the marketplace? This would save consumers, insurers and the Government vast amounts of money since a sugar pill proved to be almost as effective as the $4.00 per pill antidepressant. Why would doctors and the drug companies still be pushing these drugs? Profits over performance over people.
